Is the Boss GX-10 the new best-in-class compact amp and effects processor?

Boss has unveiled the GX-10, a floor-based amp and effects processor which looks to compete with the category’s heavyweights on price and an even more condensed form factor.
The demand for amp modellers is on the rise, and so is the demand for ones which are compact and highly portable. Just last month, for example, Neural DSP launched the Nano Cortex (after a 24-minute teaser video which left fans confused, to put it lightly).

And like the Nano Cortex – which is essentially a compact version of Neural’s Quad Cortex – the Boss GX-10 arrives as the smaller sibling of the existing GX-100, and features the same core sound engine and colour touch display. Broadly, new features include multi-mode footswitches, an integrated expression pedal, as well as USB audio connectivity.

Offering a “universe of ultra-responsive tones in a travel-ready size”, the GX-10 comes loaded with 23 guitar amps and nine bass amps, including high-gain X-Ultra, X-Optima, and X-Titan types crafted with the latest Boss modelling technology.

Elsewhere, guitarists can flavour their sound with 170 different effects, including overdrives and distortions, mod effects, delays, reverbs, dedicated bass effects, and Boss classics like Slow Gear, Octave, Slicer and more.

As mentioned, the GX-10 features a colour touch display with four dynamic parameter knobs. Up to two amps and 15 effects are supported in each memory slot, and users can easily change effect order and create series or parallel routings by dragging blocks with a finger on the screen. Additionally, send/return jacks allow users to integrate their favourite external pedals.
Also tailored to performing guitarists, the GX-10 offers “versatile real-time sound adjustment possibilities”, with multiple control modes and user-assignable settings for “maximum flexibility” with just three footswitches.
Like Line 6’s HX Edit and Neural DSP’s Cortex Cloud softwares, GX-10 users can tap into Boss Tone Studio, where they can edit sounds and load their own speaker cab IRs from a Mac or Windows computer.

Price-wise, the GX-10 comes in at $399, a very competitive price point when you consider its competitors – like the HX Stomp and Nano Cortex – are priced at $649 and $549, respectively.
