“I’m not looking to play it live any time soon!”: The Slayer song even Kerry King is scared of

Even the most speedy of players sometimes run into songs that put them through their paces. For Kerry King, there’s one Slayer track in particular that he finds most challenging to play.
King believes Dittohead from the band’s 1994 album Divine Intervention is their fastest track, and it’s not one he’s hoping to perform in the near future. Though King has been busy with his solo work, the band recently reunited to play at Louder Than Life, Riot Fest and Aftershock festival for their first live dates since 2019.

In a Q&A with Metal Hammer for its latest print issue, King is asked to name the hardest song he’s ever played. He responds, “I could go a number of ways with that [question], but I’ll say Dittohead for the sheer speed of it. That’s probably our fastest song, and it’s not one I’m looking to play live any time soon!”

Speed is not usually an issue for King though – in fact, he recently shared his own tips for getting around the fretboard faster: “A lot of people don’t know that they don’t need to play from the elbow,” he told Premier Guitar. “If you want any kind of speed and you want to be articulate, you’ve got to play from the wrist. You’ve got to have as minimal movement as you can.”
King also explained that the elbow is too far from the pick “to be the appropriate hinge for speed”. He added, “If your action is coming from your wrist, you’ve got a lot more control over the speed and the articulation. That’s how it’s got to be if you want to play this kind of music.”
Kerry King’s debut solo record From Hell I Rise is out now. He will continue touring in November.
