“If your guitar is flawless, maybe you haven’t played it enough…”: Kiko Loureiro on why guitarists shouldn’t be too precious about their instruments
Scratch it, ding it, live with it – just don’t treat it like a museum piece. Kiko Loureiro’s latest piece of guitar advice might make gear purists wince, but he swears it’s all for the greater good.
The former Megadeth guitarist recently shared his philosophy on Instagram, reminding players that guitars are meant to be used, not coddled.

“If your guitar is flawless, maybe you haven’t played it enough,” he says. “Scratches and dings? Those are just proof you’re creating something real. Use it. Abuse it.”
To prove his point, Loureiro shares a video where he casually rubs – and whacks – his Ibanez guitar against a hardshell case. The post also features a clip from a recent interview where he expands on the idea, urging players to stop obsessing over keeping their instruments pristine.
“I use guitars that are like, around $3,000 or so – expensive guitars,” says the virtuoso. “[They are] my signature guitars from Ibanez.”
“You’ve gotta lose the fuss. You grab the new guitar, you scratch it. Grab the key right away. You do it right away, because the guitar has to be part of your everyday life. It’s gotta be with you all the time.”
“If you keep thinking, ‘I can’t scratch it. Hold on, I’m gonna put it back in the case,’ you’ll never practice!”

Last year, Kiko Loureiro opened an official shop on Reverb, selling a selection of stage-used gear and other memorabilia from his Megadeth days.
Highlights of the collection include a Gibson Les Paul Modern that the guitarist played for two songs every night during Megadeth’s 2022 tour, a selection of acoustic guitars – a tour-used Godin Multiac ACS SA Grand Concert, Godin Arena Pro CW, and an Ibanez GA6CE-AM used on tours in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
