“If they were Dime’s original riffs and ideas, of course”: Zakk Wylde says he’s open to recording new Pantera music – but only based on Dimebag Darrell’s existing ideas

Zakk Wylde says he would consider recording new Pantera music based on ideas that the late Dimebag Darrell began writing, despite previously shutting down the idea.
In a new interview with Guitar Interactive [via Blabbermouth], the guitarist addresses the possibility of the reformed Pantera lineup creating new music.

Wylde has said in the past that the band – which now consists of him on guitar, original members Phil Anselmo (vocals) and Rex Brown (bass), and drummer Charlie Benante – wouldn’t consider creating new music using the Pantera name, but his position appears to have shifted.
“Rita [Haney, Dimebag’s partner] has tons of cassette recordings of Dime writing riffs and stuff like that,” Wylde says. “So, I guess if it would be something like, let’s say if it’s Eric Clapton playing with [Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer] Mitch [Mitchell] and Noel [Redding, bassist].
“If Eric went out and did what we’re doing right now, a Jimi Hendrix celebration, and Mitch and Noel asked Eric Clapton to come out because he was buddies with Jimi and they were just like, ‘Would you go out and sing and play Jimi’s stuff?’ and Eric does it.
“After that it’s just like, ‘We’ve got these recordings Jimi never finished, a song called Purple Haze and a song called The Wind Cries Mary and this song called Little Wing or whatever, and we’ll properly record them if they were just Jimi jamming on a tape recorder, just him playing them.
“If they were, obviously, Dime’s original riffs and ideas, yeah of course. Pantera is those four guys… If it was something Dime wrote and he and Vinnie were working on.”
It’s not the first time Wylde has been asked about releasing new music under the Pantera name.
During an interview in early 2024 on SiriusXM, his answer regarding new Pantera music was different. At the time he said, “I think you would have to call it something else… Pantera is those four guys, so you can’t replace that.” He was open to the idea of creating new music with the current lineup, but under a different name. “How could you call it Pantera?” he said.
Dimebag was a founding member of Pantera, alongside his brother Vinnie Paul, and remained in the band until he was shot and killed while performing with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio in December 2004.
