“I wish Kurt were here so he could hold our wondrous grandchild”: Tony Hawk pays emotional tribute to Kurt Cobain after finding old Nirvana ticket stub
Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk shared some touching words about Kurt Cobain earlier this week, after digging out an old Nirvana ticket stub.
Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean and Hawk’s son Riley welcomed a baby boy named Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk in September 2024. The pair married back in 2023. Upon finding his old Nirvana ticket, Hawk took to Instagram to share his sadness that frontman Cobain isn’t here to see their shared grandchild, and to reflect on the power of the gig.

The ticket was from a 1991 show at The Vatican (now closed) in Washington on 20 October. Hawk was at an event at Houston Skatepark that day, and went directly to the gig as soon as he was finished. It took place shortly after the release of their iconic record, Nevermind, and the ticket was priced at only $10.
“It was as transformative as live music can possibly be. We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same,” Hawk writes in the post shared to his story. “I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”

Kurt Cobain sadly died by suicide in April 1994. His approach to guitar is still spoken about regularly, with Joe Satriani unpicking his skills just recently: “You go back and look at Nirvana clips, and you realise this guy is playing everything he’s supposed to play. He’s not looking at what he’s playing, so obviously he really knows the instrument,” he told Classic Rock in January. “And he’s playing with one of the greatest drummers of all time [Dave Grohl], so that wouldn’t have worked if he was not a good guitarist.”
Cobain’s old instruments still command astronomically high prices at auction, too; the Martin acoustic he played during Nirvana’s iconic MTV Unplugged performance sold for over $6 million at auction, while his Mustang sold recently for £4.5 million.
