“I think LSD was important to all of us. I know it was to me”: Robby Krieger on how psychedelics powered the early days of The Doors

While a dangerous drug with many adverse side effects, history is littered with instances of musicians using acid (LSD) to tap into a creativity that would otherwise be unavailable to their sober mind.
In an interview in the new print edition of Classic Rock, Robby Krieger – guitarist for the psychedelic rock outfit The Doors – recounts his experience using acid, and that of his bandmates, too.

“I think LSD was important to all of us. I know it was to me” Krieger says. “It took me out of my normal thought pattern and showed me that there were other ways to use your mind.
“Actually, I’d been using LSD since before I took up meditation. I’d do it at least once a week. We had a bunch of guys and girls that would get together every weekend, pretty much. John [Densmore, Doors drummer] became one of them for a while.”
Densmore concurs: “When it came to LSD, I thought: ‘There’s knowledge there, but it’s dangerous.’ It’s like danger is always next to knowledge. I don’t want to say you can take LSD and smoke pot and make great art. I would say it influenced the seeking process, your research, your practice.”
Krieger says most of his LSD use came prior to his time in The Doors, and that while he was in the band, he only used “once in a while”.
“I still did acid once in a while when I was in The Doors,” he says, “especially with Jim. He was doing a lot of acid. Jim would take so much that it was ridiculous, but he claimed that it took him back to past lives and stuff like that. I think it really did help him.”
