“I do want to state clearly that I prefer a real amp”: Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett assures he isn’t a total amp modeller convert
Chris Shiflett has once again spoke about his use of amp modellers, but he wants to make it abundantly clear he still loves a real amp best.
The Foo Fighters guitarist and solo artist has formerly said that he loves to use sims when playing smaller shows, and particularly praised the Strymon Iridium. He also used an amp modeller when recording his latest solo EP, Starry Nights & Campfire Lights, too.

According to Shiflett, this time he used a Neural DSP Quad Cortex for the recordings, but fear not if you’re an amp traditionalist, as despite his high praise for such modern gear, he is still a tube amp guy at his core.
Speaking in the new print issue of Total Guitar, Shiflett was asked if he used the Iridium for his EP recordings: “It actually wasn’t the Strymon! I used a Quad Cortex for all the electric guitars. We recorded everything pretty quick. Truth be told, I didn’t have a lot of time and didn’t want to grab all my old amps and set them up. So I just brought the Quad Cortex, baby.
“It really did the job… I think it sounds very close to vintage amps. If I hadn’t told you that, you probably wouldn’t have guessed, right? I know some guitar players purposefully use things like Fractals on their records because then they have the exact same tones for the live shows. That’s what I was thinking. I’ll record with this thing and then I’ve got those sounds on my little device wherever I go on tour.”
Shiflett later adds, “But just for the record, I do want to state clearly that I prefer a real amp, but at my advanced age I’m a lazy motherfucker and it’s okay to throw a Quad Cortex in.”
