“I caused my whole family heartbreak and shame” David Lee Roth’s typically eccentric new song seems layered with subtext at Van Halen’s excess
Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth has a new song and it’s all about Forgiveness.
Originally teased earlier this year with a version titled Lavender Forgiveness, which featured lyrics sung over Taylor Swift’s Lavender Haze, the latest rendition — released on Christmas Day — strips away the pop elements and showcases Roth’s raw vocal talent against an acoustic backdrop.

Released without much fanfare on his social media channels, Forgiveness features some strikingly candid lyrics. In it, Roth confronts what’s presumably the demons of his rock and roll lifestyle and its accompanying “heartbreak and shame”.
The song, with the opening lines “I took a long trip South on that whiskey train/ I took Jesus Christ’s name in vain/ I blew a fortune on cocaine,” also appears to be a reference to the chaotic and indulgent lifestyle that defined Van Halen during their heyday.

In other news, over four hours of live Van Halen footage has surfaced on YouTube recently. The YouTube account that uploaded them says that the videos were all remastered from old bootleg VHS tapes, and that “some AI” were used to “make it look a little better” than what’s currently available online.
The footage features three memorable shows: a Van Halen concert at Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from February 1983 during the Hide Your Sheep tour, which was filmed for local television; and two solo performances by Roth — one recorded at the Montreal Forum during the Eat ‘Em & Smile tour in 1986, and another captured at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto on 1988’s Skyscraper tour.
