How Jake Bugg ended up buying the “rarest guitar” he’d ever seen while drunk in Tokyo

“This is one of the rarest guitars I’ve ever come across,” exclaims Jake Bugg as he showcases his 1953 Gibson J-185 in the first episode of the new season of Guitar.com’s My Guitars & Me.
“This one’s just stayed at my house so it probably needs a bit of a setup. This one definitely doesn’t go on the road.”

How did the Nottingham-bred singer-songwriter come to add such a rare guitar to his collection? Tokyo, and a lot of booze, naturally.
“I came across this in Tokyo, Japan. I’d never actually seen one before,” he says. “We kept looking at it for a bit, [tried] to look it up [online] and not much was coming up. And eventually I asked the guy, ‘Could I have a go on that, please?’ And he was like, ‘No.’
“I had to get out pictures on my phone of guitars I already owned, and eventually he came round and let me have a go on it.”
He goes on: “I had a few drinks, thought about it, came back, and then was like, ‘Let’s go and buy it!’ The worst ‘I’ll go think about it’ situation ever.”
“It’s definitely one of the rarest guitars I’ve ever come across,” he adds. “It looks like it tells a story. It looks like it should be in a museum or something. But I absolutely love it. This one does not go on the road. It stays at home and is used on records whenever I need it.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Bugg details how he came to own his 1954 Butterscotch Blonde Fender Esquire electric.
“I didn’t really know a lot about these guitars – I was on tour in America with Noel Gallagher and Snow Patrol, and the guitar tech for Noel Gallagher’s guitarist took me to Gruhn’s in Nashville. We went to the upstairs room and they had all these old, amazing guitars. I just love the colour on it. It’s not too flash. And it just had that country kind of tone. It was just so instant when I plugged it in.
