“He wasn’t intimidated. He just did it”: Timothée Chalamet’s guitar tutor reveals how he mastered a tricky Bob Dylan classic
Timothée Chalamet got a thorough musical education as he was preparing to play Bob Dylan in the new biopic A Complete Unknown. This involved him taking guitar lessons and according to his teacher, he managed to tackle one notoriously tricky Dylan hit with aplomb.
Larry Saltzman, who previously toured with Simon and Garfunkel, recently told Rolling Stone that he could sense Chalamet’s musicality even when he was a guitar novice.

“When he got to my place and we had our guitars in our hands, I asked if he’d played, and he said just a little. He kind of knew one or two chords and formed a couple of chords, and that’s what he did. I could tell he was just very musical right away,” he says.
Chalamet even had a surprising fearlessness when he came to learn Dylan’s hit Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, which packs a distinctive but famously tricky picking section.
“It blew my mind to revisit it,” Saltzman says. “And it’s a really fast tempo. I was intimidated by teaching it to him. I was intimidated from playing it myself. He wasn’t intimidated by it. He just did it. It has a little funny hammer in it that comes around every once in a while.
“Sometimes Bob would maybe vary the pattern. But in the middle of me explaining it to him, he’s already playing. I mean, it wasn’t playing like at tempo and perfectly, but he’s already like going.”
Chalamet showed off his guitar chops – and his knowledge of Dylan’s repertoire – on Saturday Night Live over the weekend. He performed three somewhat obscure Dylan cuts on the show, which he said were his personal favourites – Outlaw Blues, Three Angels and Tomorrow Is A Long Time.
Tomorrow Is A Long Time even found its way back into the iTunes chart afterwards, even though it doesn’t appear in A Complete Unknown.
