“He told me how much he hated it”: Greta Van Fleet’s Jake Kiszka on the rock artist that hates their own band name
According to Greta Van Fleet’s Jake Kiszka, there’s one huge rock artist out there that doesn’t like their own moniker.
Though they may have formed all the way back in 1995, Kiszka says that frontman Dave Grohl has previously said he doesn’t like the Foo Fighters band name. The name’s origin dates back to WWII, and was used in reference to unidentified flying objects believed to be secret weapons.

Kiszka listed the Foo’s as having his least favourite band name during an interview with Guitar Player, in which he also said Grohl isn’t too keen on it either. “Foo Fighters. I was talking with Dave Grohl and he told me how much he hated the name,” he revealed. As for his personal favourite, Kiskza named King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.
Grohl actually wrote and recorded the first Foo songs back during his time with Nirvana, but kept them to himself. After the death of Kurt Cobain, Grohl didn’t feel comfortable with releasing the music as a solo artist.
Interestingly, he’s already gone on the record with his disdain for the band name. In a 2010 interview with Clash, he said, “I had recorded the first record by myself, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that Foo Fighters might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy. Silly, huh?”
He went on to add, “Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it’s the stupidest fucking band name in the world.”
Last May, Jake Kiszka announced that he had formed a new “collective” named Mirador. The band, consisting of Kiszka and Chris Turpin of musical duo Ida Mae, made their live debut by opening for Greta Van Fleet on tour.
