Guitar DIY: How to perform a basic Stratocaster setup
The fifth instalment in our DIY series in association with Elixir Strings gives you all the tools you need to perform a simple setup on your beloved Stratocaster.
Matt Gleeson of Monty’s Guitars takes a stock Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster and gives it some much-needed attention. Matt walks us through the basics of a great Stratocaster setup, from adjusting the intonation of that tricky six-saddle bridge to cutting the strings correctly for vintage-style tuners to setting the action for optimal playability.
The emphasis of this video is on optimising and improving your guitar with minimal time and cost. With a few simple tweaks and some routine maintenance, that old Strat or S-type that you’re struggling to bond with may yet surprise you.
Even if your S-type isn’t a Fender there are plenty of important takeaways in this video that will apply to most Strat-inspired guitars. Be sure to check our YouTube channel for other DIY videos on how to setup a Les Paul and Telecaster, alongside finding the optimal time to change your strings and more.
