“God was in that guitar. That’s my spiritual defibrillator”: Jamie Foxx believes daughter’s bedside guitar playing saved his life

Actor and comedian Jamie Foxx has shared how his teenage daughter helped him to recover following a stroke through the power of guitar.
In a new Netflix special titled What Had Happened Was…, Foxx recalls how he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke in April 2023. His now 16-year-old daughter Anelise snuck into the hospital room with her guitar at a time when it was “touch and go” for Foxx, which led to his health vitals stabilising.

During the special, Foxx recalls (via People), “There was a 13 or 14 day period where they said, we’ve gotta keep him calm and we’ve given him every medication that they could. It’s not working, we gotta keep him calm because his vitals are so high we’re going to lose him.”
He adds, joking, “Do you know what the worst thing to have in a hospital room when you’re trying to keep calm? Black family members,” before continuing, “That’s when a miracle happened, and that miracle was working through my youngest daughter. She’s 14. I didn’t want her to see me like that but she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and she said, ‘I know what my daddy needs.’”

“They said when she was playing, my vitals went down. The nurses at the nurses station were baffled. Like, ‘Wow what did they give him?’ They rushed into the room and she said, ‘Ssh. I got him’… Do you know what I found out? That God was in that guitar. That’s my spiritual defibrillator.”
The pair then perform a song together, with Anelise on her Rickenbacker and Foxx providing vocals as he recounts the story. Justus West, who played guitar on Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter album, has since taken to Instagram to reveal that he’d been tutoring Anelise for the past year in preparation for the performance .
“I’m so honored to have played a part in this amazing special by Jamie Foxx. For the past year and some change I have been teaching his insanely talented daughter Anelise guitar! I helped them put together their beautiful performance,” he states. “Foxx, thank you for being an amazing friend and mentor. It is inspiring to see you be an active and incredible father to this rising super star. Go watch the Netflix special!”
