Geezer Butler: “Van Halen used to attract tonnes of women, Black Sabbath never did”

Geezer Butler has reflected on Black Sabbath’s tour with Van Halen, and how they’d have wild parties after every night on stage.
The two bands toured together in 1978 and grew pretty tight. As formerly shared by Tony Iommi, Eddie Van Halen even later helped the band write the track Evil Eye from their 1994 record, Cross Purposes.

It seems things got pretty crazy when the two mighty rock forces joined up, with the shows opening up a new world for the Sabbath bunch, as Butler says Van Halen “attracted tonnes of women, and Sabbath never did”.
In an interview with LifeMinute, Butler says (via Ultimate Guitar), “Van Halen were good. We got on great with them. Used to [have] parties like you wouldn’t believe, every night. Van Halen, at the time, they were a big MTV band. So, they used to attract tonnes of women, and Sabbath never did. But [for] Van Halen, like half the audience would be girls, and so you can imagine what the parties were like after every night.”
Of Eddie’s playing, he goes on to add, “Fantastic. He was so humble as well. He used to come into our dressing room every night, [saying] ‘Thanks for having us on tour’, and everything. He was such a nice guy. And we – especially Tony – maintained friendships with him until he passed away.
“When Van Halen were playing in England, Eddie came down to our rehearsals and helped write one of the songs that was on an album [Evil Eye]. But we couldn’t say that he was half the composer, because of publishing commitments and stuff. So, yeah, he was a great guy.”

Geezer Butler released a memoir, Into The Void, last year. It documents his early years growing up in Birmingham into his time within the band. You can buy it now in paperback or hardcover.
