Fender has announced a new set of signature Telecaster pickups designed in collaboration with Grammy-winning Americana artist Jason Isbell.
Voiced by renowned tone guru Tim Shaw, these pickups are said to capture the essence of Isbell’s iconic sound with a “perfect blend of Tele twang and Strat sparkle”.

In particular, the bridge pickup is based on the single-coil found on Isbell’s ‘65 Candy Apple Red Telecaster, delivering all the “twang, sparkle and fire Jason is known for”. The neck pickup, on the other hands, uses a slightly taller bobbin that allows for more winds, providing a touch of Stratocaster character.
As Shaw explains, “I’ve long been a fan of Jason’s playing, so it was an honour to work with him on these custom pickups.”
“We started with the bridge pickup, which is based on one from one of Jason’s favourite guitars, a gorgeous ’65 Candy Apple Red Tele. The resulting duplicate offers classic fat, full Tele tones. For the neck, we went with a Twisted Tele – my personal favourite Tele neck pickup – which offers Stratocaster-esque sounds; the best of both worlds!”
Other notable features include formvar-coated magnet wire to improve overall brightness on the neck pickup and a plain enamel wire for some classic ‘60 punch and twang on the bridge pickup.
Isbell’s signature pickup set also comes loaded with Alnico 5 magnets for more “focused and enhanced” dynamics and are wax-potted with a light, road-worn ageing look. The set is priced at $149.99.

In other news, Jason Isbell recently spoke about the tight bond between him and his 400 Unit bandmates – and the magic that’s produced when they play together on stage.
“We enjoy each other’s company, first and foremost,” he said. “I think that translates into a live show… I think that’s really, really valuable, because there becomes a sort of shorthand between the people on stage.”
“I don’t think there’s any rock band that can hang with us right now,” he added.
