Fender Custom Shop announces Carlos Lopez as new Master Builder
Fender’s Custom Shop has a new Master Builder among its ranks: Carlos Lopez. With an apprenticeship under revered Master Builder Tom Krause and decades of luthiery experience under his belt, Lopez will now have creative authority to put his designs to wood.
Following his graduation from Musician Institute’s Guitar Craft Academy in 2007, Lopez began his Fender journey with a full-time appointment in the brand’s production line before ascending to the Fender Custom Shop. According to the brand, he cut his teeth in “nearly every position in the Shop”, from tune-testing to relic’ing to fretwork.
As an apprentice under Master Builder Todd Krause, he assisted on several high-profile signature models, including those for the likes of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower and Robbie Robertson.
With Lopez at the creative reigns, here’s hoping we see his jaw-dropping creations at NAMM 2020.
