Developers “genuinely sorry” for demolishing Angus and Malcolm Young’s childhood home by accident
The childhood home of AC/DC bandmates and brothers Malcolm and Angus Young has been demolished by developers ‘by accident’.

According to the Herald Sun, the house, located at 4 Burleigh Street in Sydney’s Inner West – was quietly bulldozed in recent weeks after being purchased by developers in February 2023 for AUD $5.8 million.
Even though the house was put on Australia’s National Trust List of Historic Homes in 2013, developers claimed they weren’t aware of the property’s cultural significance before they tore it down.
In a statement, Burwood Square Pty Ltd general manager Leon Kmita apologised for the oversight, and said his team is now working to salvage materials from the site to create a “special space” like a cafe or a bar where AC/DC fans can “gather to celebrate the band’s enduring legacy”.
“We regret that the previous long-term owner did not share this vital part of the property’s background with us. Learning about this connection after our plans were already underway has shocked us. We are genuinely sorry for this oversight,” he said.
“On behalf of the team at Burwood Square, I want to convey our heartfelt regret… we now recognise how deeply this location resonates with the AC/DC community and fans worldwide. We feel a strong responsibility to honour AC/DC’s legacy and to make amends to all the fans who hold this band in such high regard.”
“While we cannot change the past, we are dedicated to celebrating this significant part of their story. To the global fanbase of AC/DC, please know that we hear you, appreciate your deep admiration for this legendary band, and are devoted to making this right.”
The Young family migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1963, settling at the Villawood Migrant Hostel initially. After living temporarily in several homes in Burwood, they permanently moved to 4 Burleigh Street in 1965, where the Young brothers continued to hone their musical talents before they eventually formed AC/DC in 1973.
