Comedian Bill Burr says “the number one place to see sad men” is Guitar Center

Comedian Bill Burr’s new stand-up special takes a savage swipe at Guitar Center, as he jokes it is “one of the saddest places on earth”.
His new show, Drop Dead Years, will arrive on Hulu on 14 March. A teaser clip shared to social media shows a snippet of his Guitar Center segment, and it’s even caught the attention of some popular players in the game.

“I will give you the number one place to see sad men: Guitar Center. Oh my God, one of the saddest places on earth,” says Burr in the video. “Failed, struggling musicians behind the counter. A bunch of men in loveless marriages or divorced just walking around, looking at the guitars. ‘Is that a custom colour, is it? Maybe if I add that to my collection it’ll fill up whatever this void is in the centre of my chest.”

On the whole, it seems Burr’s joke has been widely well received, as even Gibson’s own Mark Agensi has replied to the clip on Instagram with a row of laughing emojis. Misha Mansoor of Periphery also comments, “Hahaha Jesus he’s going for the jugular”, while Questlove simply replies with a bunch of skull emojis. Blake Wyland of The Tone Mob podcast also responds, “The Void desires custom shop guitars and it must be satiated,” with a laughing emoji.
All Guitar Center jokes aside, the retail chain launched an initiative to help musicians replace instruments lost in LA wildfires back in January. The programme ran until the end of February, and saw the Guitar Center Foundation accept applications for special one-time grants to replace destroyed gear.
Bill Burr’s Drop Dead Years lands on 14 March. You can check out more from Guitar Center in the meantime, if you need to fill the void.
