“Bro, check it out and play her on stage!”: The time Kirk Hammett let Jack White play Greeny onstage
It seems Kirk Hammett and Jack White are making a habit of swapping guitars once in a while.
In January, Hammett made headlines when he shared photos of himself playing Jack White’s famous Triplecaster. It turns out he was just returning a favour after Hammett let White play Greeny, the iconic 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard once owned by guitar legend Peter Green.

“I sent him a Greeny. He’s played the original,” the Metallica guitarist mentions in a new interview with Guitar World.
“I turned up at one of his shows with Greeny and said “Bro, check it out, and play her on stage!’” he says. “He used that guitar for a few songs.”
Watching White play Greeny gave him an idea. “When the replicas came out, I sent him one because I knew he’d dig it. He was happy and wasn’t expecting anything. So a couple of months ago, I got a text from him saying, ‘You’re gonna get a package in the mail.’”

The package contained one of White’s Triplecasters. “Then a guitar case showed up, and when I opened it up, I was so happy. He occasionally sends me his Third Man pedals, which are totally psycho. I love them.”
This comes after Hammett said that other guitarists had the opportunity to buy the legendary guitar, named after Fleetwood Mac founding guitarist Peter Green, before he snapped it up himself.
In a new interview with The Telegraph, Hammett explained: “It’s been offered to other major players, and they passed on it for whatever reason, but when I saw Greeny, I knew in less than a minute that I was never gonna give it back! I had such an instant connection to that guitar, it’s such an amazing source of inspiration and it’s my best-sounding guitar.”
