Billy Corgan’s advice for beginner musicians: “put your whole focus into reaching people through the internet”
Billy Corgan, frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, has shared a video on Facebook in which he gives his take on how to gain a fanbase as a band in the internet age.

The video features a performance of the Smashing Pumpkins song La Dolly Vita with guitarist Jonathan Espeche of the band Empty Shells– who asked Corgan for a quick bit of advice, as to how to “get your footing” as a musician.
Corgan distinguished how the Pumpkins got their start from the advice he would give now. Today, Corgan said the answer was to “create your own world” – focusing on having a unique and engaging internet presence as a band, building a fanbase who are willing to buy physical releases: “Let’s say you stitch together 30,000 people who are willing to talk about you, share. Okay, now, out of 30,000 people, if you press your own vinyl record, are 500 people gonna buy it, 1,000 people gonna buy it? At least that gives you one step forward, and you can start to build and work from the model that exists.”
With regards to playing live instead, Billy had to say: “But going out into the world and playing down the street? I would say don’t even bother.”
The video was filmed in 2017, only shared recently as part of Corgan’s Thirty Days documentary project.
