Bad Brains bassist reiterates belief they created moshing: “All that s**t started with us”

If you’re a fan of heavy music, chances are you’re a fan of a good old mosh pit too. But do you know where moshing began? Many believe we have Bad Brains to thank.
According to a little bit of punk lore, “mosh” originates from the word “mash”. It’s believed that audience members misheard Bad Brains’ vocalist H.R. incite them to mosh instead of “mash it down” during a performance during the late 1970s or early 1980s, though the exact year is not officially reported.

It’s also contradictorily reported that this occurred during a cover of Scream’s Total Mash, or during Bad Brains’ own track, Banned In D.C.. But while details on just exactly how it all happened are rather hazy, bassist Darryl Jenifer thinks they really did have a significant part to play in the origins of mosh.
In an interview with Metal Hammer for its latest print issue, Jenifer shares why he’s a believer it really did start with them: “The whole slamming shit… it was pogoing [a style of jumping seen at punk shows] when I started!” he says.
“All that shit started with us. Because of the speed, I think those kids ended up bouncing into each other instead. Especially when we started adding those reggae parts, and kids were skanking like they’d come to see The Specials.”

In other news of musical firsts, Adrian Belew has just recently shared his belief that he owned one of the first purposefully relic’ed guitars. The guitarist, who is due to embark on a King Crimson tribute tour later this year, shared a story of his “ugly” Strat, which his pal Seymour Duncan helped him to beat up and look like something more vintage.
