Alex Lifeson says he and Geddy Lee were asked to play at the Black Sabbath reunion, “but other things came up”
Alex Lifeson says he and fellow Rush bandmate Geddy Lee were asked to play at the Black Sabbath reunion show this summer, but they had to cancel.
Though Lifeson affirms that the pair would have loved to play at the event, which is due to take place at Villa Park in Birmingham (UK) on 5 July, sadly, “other things came up”. The mighty show will mark the first time that the original Sabbath lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, have played together in 20 years.

Speaking to Chuck Armstrong of Loudwire Nights, Lifeson says [via Blabbermouth], “That whole thing that they’re doing this summer, [Geddy and I] were asked to be a part of it, and we had agreed to do it, but other things came up, and sadly we had to back out of it, ‘cause it would have been a lot of fun. And we enjoy playing with other people, and it gets Geddy and me together to do stuff, and all of that.”
Also in the interview, Lifeson recalls how he felt about Sabbath and their music during the early days of their respective music careers: “We were playing high schools and eventually clubs and things like that. I don’t know if I was a really a fan of Black Sabbath, but I did get a couple records back then and I enjoyed listening to them. I respected Tony’s guitar playing.” He later added, “There was an interesting parallel for their beginnings and our beginnings.”
