“AI terrifies me that’s for sure” Michael Kiwanuka thinks that AI-created music will “destroy” individuality

British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has cautioned that AI-created music will “destroy” individuality.
It’s no exaggeration to say that AI has wormed its way into nearly every corner of music-making. From AI-generated songs and machine learning-powered track mastering to the recreation of vocals that emulate dead musicians, society is bearing witness to a technological revolution quite unlike anything before.

While these advancements offer exciting possibilities for artists and fans, they also raise pressing questions about authenticity, creativity, and the very essence of music itself. In a recent interview with MusicWeek, Kiwanuka shared his apprehensions about the technology, saying, “AI terrifies me, that’s for sure. There’ll be some creative ways to use it, but my only view is that I want to fight tooth and nail to protect individuality, which I think AI can destroy.”
Kiwanuka believes that while AI may enhance some creative processes, it falls short when it comes to the emotional imperfections that make certain types of music unique—elements that are critical to preserving the human spirit in art.
“There are certain types of music that we must uphold that only works when it’s slightly broken,” says the musician. “Soul music’s one of them, for me, where the human spirit comes out and it’s rough around the edges and slightly cracked.”
He argues that these imperfections are precisely what give music its power and that AI, no matter how advanced, can’t replicate them.
“If we keep developing that kind of music, then AI can’t touch us. We need artists and music that is rough around the edges, that is real and AI can’t replicate.”
Kiwanuka’s stance speaks to a larger debate about the role of technology in creative industries. As AI continues to reshape the music landscape, preserving the ‘humanness’ that often define truly great music will be an ongoing battle for artists.
