GAK website taken offline as rumours swirl around the Brighton music store’s sudden closure
Update: Since the original publish date of this article, GAK’s website has been taken offline.
Long-standing Brighton music store GAK has been closed suddenly “for seven days”, due to “maintenance”.
Per local newspaper The Argus, shutters are currently drawn over the store’s distinctive yellow front, and a sign in the window says it is “closed due to maintenance”. Further concrete information is few and far between at this time, apart from a message on the company’s website – which has now been taken down entirely – which read: “Our Brighton store is currently closed for seven days”.

But while there’s limited concrete info, speculation has begun to swirl online surrounding the future of the landmark music store, which opened its doors in 1992.
GAK also has its own Reverb store, which currently sits empty after having all of its listings pulled.
Elsewhere, a page has been created on Business Sale Report – which describes itself as “the UK’s leading marketplace of small and mid-market businesses for sale”. The name of the business for sale is not mentioned, though it is listed as a “Musical instrument Retailer & Supplier” looking for a “Fast Sale”.
“An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the UK’s largest and most trusted musical instrument retailers,” the listing reads.
We must stress that we can’t verify the authenticity of this listing, but its timing along with the sudden closure of the GAK store may prove telling.
Online music forums are currently abuzz with discussion surrounding GAK’s sudden “temporary” closure.
Two days ago, a post was made to the r/brighton subreddit, titled “R.I.P. GAK. The contents of the post have since been deleted, but it’s so far generated over 150 comments. “If it’s permanently closed it’s another loss to our city,” one user writes.

Elsewhere, on the Brighton Bands and Musicians private Facebook group, Brighton-based psychedelic rock band Space Angel writes: “GAK has until Monday to find a buyer. That’s what I have been told by a friend who works there. Staff have been sent home. It’s essentially bankrupt.”
