“I think that was Dime having fun at my expense”: Zakk Wylde explains how a freak tour injury left him playing most of the Pantera reunion tour with three fingers

Zakk Wylde has recounted what he describes as the “stupidest injury” he’s ever sustained, and how he believes the late Dimebag Darrell was playing a joke on him from beyond the grave.
In a new interview with Kerrang!, Wylde explains how while on tour with Pantera, a mishap during fan meet-and-greets left him playing the rest of the trek with only three fingers.

“I broke my hand when we were doing the Pantera celebration, doing the roulette wheel for the meet-and-greets,” he says. “I spin the wheel, and if they win… well, everyone’s a winner all the time.
“Anyway, the ball bounced out, I went to go grab it, and I smashed my hand on the table and broke it. I played with three fingers for the rest of the tour – a month and a half! I think that was Dime having fun at my expense.
“It’s already hard enough to play this stuff, and he must have been like, ‘I’ll just add this to the mix for the comedy…’”
While currently touring Europe with his Black Sabbath covers band Zakk Sabbath, outside of Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde’s main gig lies with Pantera. The legendary metal outfit’s reunion – announced back in 2022 – was not without its controversy, due to the absence of late brothers, guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. Wylde replaces Dimebag Darrell, while Charlie Benante replaces Vinnie Paul.
Elsewhere in the interview, Wylde is asked what he believes is the best guitar riff ever written, to which he replies: “You’d have to go Smoke On The Water [by Deep Purple]. That one, Iron Man by Black Sabbath, and Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. Those are the most iconic, playable riffs – anyone can do them.”
