“It’s very hard to be that unique player these days, but it’s still possible”: Mark Tremonti thinks it’s still possible to be an innovative guitarist
Has every riff been played before? Not according to Mark Tremonti, who’s firm in his belief that it’s still possible to be unique as a guitarist in 2025.
In an interview with Louder, the Creed and Alter Bridge guitarist suggests that although it’s difficult, players will keep innovating even when it doesn’t seem possible to anymore, as the guitar icons of the past have proved.

“Every time you feel like everything has already been done on guitar, somebody comes out with something new,” he points out. “Y’know, there was Eddie Van Halen, then Yngwie Malmsteen. Then Tom Morello came out and I remember thinking: ‘What the hell is he doing with those guitar solos?’ It’s very hard to be that unique player these days, but it’s still possible. Now, there’s a new player called Matteo Mancuso who’s blowing everybody’s minds. I think he’s gonna spark an entire new wave of guitar players.”
Later in the interview, he discusses his own means of trying to hone his skills and how hard he still has to work after decades in the game to learn new techniques.
“I think anybody who puts their mind to it can get faster at guitar playing,” he says. “Things do not come easy for me. I’ve seen other players where techniques seem to come so easy, and it pisses me off that I have to work for three hours on something that takes them half an hour. But I feel like I’ve got a lot of gumption. If I want to do something, I will fail and fail until I get it, and I won’t give up.”
While some have commented on the supposed death of rock music – Twisted Sister’s Jay Jay French recently declared the genre to be on life support – there are others who say there’s still life in it yet. Buckcherry’s Josh Todd, for one, believes “if you’ve got great songs, you’re going to find an audience”.
