“If you’ve got great songs, you’re going to find an audience”: Buckcherry’s Josh Todd believes modern rock bands can still find success in today’s world
In an era where attention spans are fleeting and the music industry is more saturated than ever, many argue that it’s harder than ever for rock bands to break through. But Buckcherry’s Josh Todd isn’t buying that narrative.
Speaking with Evan Toth in a new interview, the frontman pushes back against the idea that new bands are doomed to struggle, insisting that great songs will always find an audience.

Dismissing the notion that it’s impossible for modern rock bands to make their mark, Todd says [via Blabbermouth]: “In my opinion, it’s still about melody. If you’ve got a great melody, if you’ve got great songs, you’re going to find an audience. That’s just it.”
With music consumption shifting toward streaming and social media-driven discovery, Todd acknowledges that standing out is harder than ever. But he argues that the fundamentals of songwriting haven’t changed.
“I just think you’ve gotta have great songs, you’ve gotta have songs you can remember, you’ve gotta be unforgettable, especially now because information is spread so thin, and people’s attention span now is brutal,” he says. “It’s, like, you’ve got five seconds to get somebody’s attention online.”
Beyond just writing strong material, the musician also stresses the importance of having a clear identity as an artist.
“You’ve gotta have great songs and you’ve gotta have a story and you’ve gotta know who you are,” Todd explains, “and if you can put all that together, you can have success.”
Meanwhile, rock veterans like Gene Simmons and most recently, Twisted Sister’s Jay Jay French have declared the genre to be on life support, struggling to compete in an industry dominated by pop and hip-hop.
“I’m not saying that there are no rock bands. I’m just saying that the collective psyche that dictates current music trends and sociological impact of music, it’s not showing up in the rock world in terms of mass acceptance,” French argued.
“What is showing up in the music world? Hip-hop, huge. Country, huge. Female pop artists, huge. You can rattle off 20 rappers under the age of 25, you can rattle off 20 female pop singers under 25, you can rattle off country artists by the ton. You’re not rattling off rock musicians.”
“It doesn’t mean, clearly, that no one’s creating it. It just means that the body of what we constitute as the standard rock act – two guitars, bass drums, lead singer, blah, blah, blah, blah – is, for the most part, by and large, over.”
