“Can we work something out?”: Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley asks Hard Rock Cafe for the return of the Fender Telecaster he played alongside Iggy Pop

“Can we work something out?”: Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley asks Hard Rock Cafe for the return of the Fender Telecaster he played alongside Iggy Pop

In 2003, Sum 41 set out on tour supporting their 2002 album, Does This Look Infected? As guitarist and frontman Deryck Whibley explains, his playing journey with Fender had only “just started” when he found himself needing a backup for the one black Telecaster he owned. Now, more than two decades on, he’s finding himself longing for that guitar to be back in his possession.
“We were on the road in the US when I asked them if they could send me out something quick,” Whibley recalls in a post on his Instagram page. “I never specified any particular colour or style, I just said I needed something fast. A few weeks later, this pewter grey Telecaster showed up. I fell in love with it immediately.”

Straight away, he “went to town” decorating the guitar, even setting it alight similarly to his Les Pauls, but decided he didn’t like the way the finish burned up. “I just threw some stickers on it instead,” he says.
Attached to Whibley’s Instagram post are some nostalgic videos from the 2003 MTV Awards in Miami and the video for Sum 41’s collaborative track with Iggy Pop, Little Know It All, which features on his 2003 album, Skull Ring.
“We were all up really late the night before the MTV Awards shooting the music video,” Whibley explains. “I was so exhausted that whole day of the award[s] show. But when it came time to get on stage, I couldn’t help but light up from the electricity of Iggy Pop’s energy and performance.”
He continues, “Even back then we recognised the gravity of what we were doing. It was wild to actually be playing as his band at this time. Singing a song that we wrote together.”
Describing it as “one of the great musical experiences” of his life, Whibley’s nostalgia causes him to make a plea to Hard Rock Cafe, where the guitar was donated: “I will say though, I do miss this guitar! [Hard Rock Cafe] can we work something out?”

Whibley was recently reunited with another long-lost instrument. Back in 2003, the mid-’70s Gibson Marauder from Sum 41’s Fat Lip and In Too Deep videos was stolen from his house. “I thought I would never see this guitar again,” he explains. “But a few months ago, I said ‘Fuck it. I’m gonna find it and try and get this thing back.’” The details are sparse, but Whibley confirms it’s back in his possession now. “I took action and made it happen. And you know what? It wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.”
