“A keyboard just cannot do what an acoustic guitar does”: Johnny Marr explains why he’s “so annoying” to work with on film soundtracks

Johnny Marr’s love of natural, acoustic tones makes him a little bit annoying to work with on film scores, according to the man himself.
Marr – who worked with iconic composer Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack for the most recent James Bond film, No Time To Die – joined forces with Martin last October to launch two new acoustic signature models, the M6 and M7.

Speaking to Guitar.com for a new interview, Marr says of his passion for acoustics, “I just love the sound of them. Particularly on the movies, I work with really, really, very talented and revered sound sculptors – synthesiser players, keyboard players and so on. And I’m so annoying, because I always point out that a keyboard just cannot do what an acoustic guitar does. And it certainly can’t do what two acoustic guitars can do – especially with capos and voicings and stuff like that,” he states.
Marr’s Martin M-7 is a seven-string model, while the M6 is a standard six-string – both have mahogany necks with a “unique feel” created by a slightly thinner nut width. While the guitars are as wide as a Jumbo guitar, they also have the thickness of a regular 000. When speculation first began to amp up that Marr would be releasing a signature, many assumed it would be a new take on his beloved Martin D-28. “There’s no point in me just making another D-28 because the D-28s are perfect!” He explains.

Echoing a similar sentiment, he later adds, “My signature [Fender] Jag, came out in 2012, and I don’t think I have played any other guitar in my own live set in those 12 years. And if I was to develop it, which I may do now after 12 years, it will be because I want to go somewhere else. It won’t be to mess with the one I’ve got, but it will be to go down a different road. It’s like if you have a car to do a thing, and then you need to design a different car to do a different thing.”
