“You shouldn’t have to disclose very personal, private shit to get people to listen”: Soccer Mommy blasts the pressure musicians feel to share their lives with fans

Soccer Mommy‘s not about to share her whole life publicly – and strongly believes artists shouldn’t feel obligated to do so either despite industry pressures.
Although she has been open through interviews and her music about her struggles with anxiety and depression, she says that no artist should feel obligated to reveal their whole life story “to get people to listen”.

The artist – whose real name is Sophia Allison – tells Rolling Stone that she appreciates her fans caring about what she has to say. “They always want to hear what I have to give them,” she says.
Later, she explains: “People want to talk about these kinds of things but if you need help, nobody has the understanding for that. Mental health problems in the music world have become something that people talk about a lot, but any time I’ve talked about it, I don’t feel good about it personally. You shouldn’t have to disclose very personal, private shit to get people to listen.

“In this industry and career, it’s very hard to say no to things, because the whole idea is that you climb your way to the top taking every chance you get – grabbing life by the straps and fucking doing it,” she continues. “You’re not getting any more successful by deciding to take that mental health break. Mental illness doesn’t really fit the schedule.”
Allison stuck by that principle with the release of her most recent album, Evergreen, in October. Much of the record was coloured by her experience of grief but didn’t reveal who it was that she lost. On the press cycle, she also said that she didn’t want to talk about the personal circumstances that led to her loss either.
“I’m a private person. I don’t even tell my friends things,” she told NME last year. “Music has always been my outlet for my emotions.”
