“This song has broken many a rhythm guitar player”: The Trivium song that Matt Heafy says even shredders can’t play
There’s one Trivium song that Matt Heafy has seen some expert shredders try – and fail – to get right.
Heafy says that it’s been a point of pride for him to see “dudes that can shred me under the table” trip up when trying to play the Trivium deep cut Suffocating Sight, which is taken from their landmark 2005 album Ascendancy.

Listening back to the song, he does have a point. The introduction is deceptively simple, with a burst of more complex riffing coming in right after and a notoriously tricky pre-chorus. There’s even a key change to navigate near the end.
“This song has broken many a rhythm guitar player,” Heafy tells Metal Hammer. “I’ve met some really fantastic rhythm guitar players in my life who have tried to play this verse part and pre-chorus; dudes that could shred me under the table can’t play the rhythm guitar part. So I definitely pride myself on that.”
Heafy goes on to reflect upon on the song’s meaning. “This song is another look inwards: ‘I am but a farce, a satire of stability.’ This shows that self-loathing theme that I dealt with for a lot of years. I very honestly just put that out there, almost without metaphor at times. I mean, there’s a little bit with the shore metaphor I was talking about like ocean water, beach rain…”
If you’ve always wanted to hear Suffocating Sight and other Ascendancy deep cuts live, you’ll soon have your chance. Trivium will be heading back to the UK this month to play it in full for its 20th anniversary alongside Bullet For My Valentine, who are doing the same for their debut album The Poison. The tour – aptly titled Poisoned Ascendancy – kicks off at Cardiff Arena on 26th January.
