Jack White and Vernon Reid trade guitars after chance airport encounter: “We started talking, and we decided to trade signature models”
A chance encounter between Vernon Reid and Jack White at Memphis International Airport recently led to one of the most wholesome guitar moments we’ve seen of late – with White getting his hands on Reid’s new Reverend signature axe and the Living Colour guitarist walking away with White’s new signature Fender Triplecaster.
The spontaneous exchange unfolded as the two guitarists struck up a conversation and decided then and there to swap instruments.

“What do you say when you meet Vernon Reid by chance at the Memphis airport and he suggests you swap signature guitars? You say ‘Yes sir, coming right up.’ What an honour to trade axes with such a virtuoso guitarist that I remember listening to on a walkman cassette player while roaming the halls of my high school in Detroit,” White writes in an Instagram post detailing the encounter.
“His incredibly smooth and biting sounding Reverend Guitars-built signature guitar comes in three styles, this one has the amazing name of ‘Mystery Tramp’ complete with hobo secret language symbols on the neck inlays,” he explains, noting that “the eyes were sent by special request and I couldn’t help putting my III three line signature above each pickup to stare down all enemies and future comrades.”
“Thank you so much Mr Reid, hope you get the same inspiration from that Triplecaster sir.”

Meanwhile, Reid has also shared an unboxing video of the Triplecaster he received. The pair had met while traveling to their next tour stop, and as Reid recounts, “We started talking, and we decided to trade signature models.”
“Pretty awesome. Look at that case! It’s fantastic,” says the musician. “Super cool tremolo alarm, crazy pickups. I love this thing right here. Very cool. So this is the Triplecaster and Jack has the Mystery Tramp. And this is a trade that came about from a chance meeting, and it’s really cool!”
