Los Bitchos’ Serra Petale explains why cheap guitars can still be great
“Honestly, the more I’ve gotten to know this guitar, the more fantastic I think it is,” says Serra Petale, describing her special Lâg Jet New Vintage JV100.
The guitarist – who makes up one quarter of instrumental cumbia outfit Los Bitchos – joins Guitar.com in the latest episode of My Guitars & Me to tell us about her favourite six-strings.

On what drew her initially to the Jet New Vintage JV100, she explains, “I’d seen this guitar, and I was like, ‘Man, that’s Courtney Love vibes.’ I love Hole. I love grunge. So I was just like, ‘I like the look of that guitar.’”
The guitar was Petale’s first guitar, and despite its modest price tag – the now-discontinued Jet New Vintage JV100 was available for just a couple hundred bucks – it’ll always hold a special place in her heart. “This was my first guitar and it travelled with me all the way from Australia,” she says.
But despite being her first guitar, the Lâg Jet New Vintage JV100 isn’t her workhorse. No, that accolade goes to her trusty Italia Maranello Speedster II, which she bought after a chance stop in a guitar store thanks to her bandmate and bassist, Swede Josefine Jonsson.
“Our bass player wanted to go into this guitar shop, and I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ And it was love at first sight. I was like, ‘Ooh, stripes – sweet!’”
“The first thing that drew me to this guitar was its design,” she goes on. “This is what feels so good for me on stage. I love this guitar, and it’s just easy.”
There’s a theme to Petale’s guitar palette, and that’s that she doesn’t need guitars that break the bank to get the job done. At the time of writing, you can grab a Italia Maranello Speedster on the second-hand market for around £500, so like the Jet New Vintage, it definitely qualifies as a budget guitar.
