Pete Townsend shares frustrations on “creativity pundits”, says “somebody needs to occasionally slap Rick Rubin”
Pete Townshend has shared his frustrations on “creativity pundits”, who he feels “nag” people about the ways in which you should be creative.
Townsend has just released a new literary collaboration alongside his wife, Rachel Fuller, called The Seeker. Authored and composed by Fuller with additional music and lyrics by Townsend, it reimagines the 1922 Hermann Hesse novel Siddhartha.

Speaking on the Rockonteurs podcast with Fuller, Townsend shares how he has “hundreds and hundreds” of bits of unreleased music and journal entries he someday hopes to turn into a large project documenting 60 years of “creative playfulness”.
He then goes on to venture further into creative processes and names producer Rick Rubin as someone he feels contradicts himself on creativity, adding (via Ultimate Guitar), “You see a lot of stuff on YouTube and Instagram, people nagging you [about] the way that you have to be creative. Somebody needs to occasionally slap Rick Rubin, because, one minute he’s telling us that we need to do whatever we like, and then on the other hand, he’s telling us that we mustn’t do this, and we mustn’t do that.”
He later adds, “I’ve carried complete big, recording studios on the road with me sometimes, and then sometimes I’ve used little cassette machines. I’ve recorded in all kinds of different ways. And if I fancy going into a studio with a huge orchestra, I’ve done that too. But what’s most interesting is the paper. The paper, the photograph, the writing.”
However, despite his jab at Rubin, he does feel one thing the famed producer is right about is that at its core, creativity has to be fun. “It has to be enjoyable. It has to be something that you love to do, and it also has to be something that you like what you do. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that anybody else will like it.”
