“I could take a hammer and I could bash your head in – or I could build a house for you”: Jerry Cantrell says whether AI is good or bad depends on user intention
Those in the music industry are still figuring out how AI will affect things long term. It’s an issue relevant to almost every musician in the business in some way or another, so it’s only natural they all have varying takes on it.
Adding his voice to the discussion is Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell, who says whether AI is a positive or negative force for the music industry depends on user intention.

Saying artificial intelligence is similar to many inventions throughout human history which have been used for both good and bad purposes, Cantrell tells the Kerrang! In Conversation podcast: “We’re really good at creating things to make life potentially better, easier, more productive, but a lot of the times, a lot of the tools that we make for good get used for ill purposes too.
“AI is one of those things as well. I look at it as a tool. The rub is us, right? I could take a hammer and I could bash your head in or I could build a house for you.”
Recently, Rooster, one of Alice In Chains’ biggest and heaviest grunge hits was transmuted into Yacht Rock using AI. Not only did the post gain the attention of Alice In Chains bassist, Mike Inez, who stated his approval of the rework, but Cantrell has now echoed his bandmate’s sentiment in the Kerrang! interview.
“I thought it was pretty funny and pretty good, actually,” Cantrell says. “I think that it’s possible for [AI] to change and alter a lot of things about life, but I don’t think it can replace the human element.”
Cantrell is surely a musician less inclined to be fearful of AI as Alice In Chains are still active over 35 years after their formation. In 2022, William Duvall, the band’s rhythm guitarist, said they are working on their seventh album. Furthermore, Cantrell just released a new solo album, I Want Blood, last month.
