Where NOT to get Elton John to sign your guitar – Nashville’s Sam Palladio shows off his Gibson acoustics

When you play one of the main characters of a musical drama TV show which boasts millions of viewers per season, you inevitably get the opportunity to meet some of your heroes.
In the case of Sam Palladio, who plays Gunnar Scott in American musical soap opera series Nashville, a highlight came when he had the chance to meet Elton John, who appeared in the penultimate episode of the show’s season four.

Appearing in the latest episode of Guitar.com’s My Guitars & Me series – which sees artists wax lyrical about their guitar collections – Palladio showcases his Gibson CF-100E, and explains why the side of the upper bout of your guitar is not a good place for a signature from one of your idols.
“There was a season of Nashville – season four – and I got to sing with Elton John,” Palladio recalls. “So that was one of the best days ever on set, as you can imagine. And I did get him to sign this afterwards. I [realised later] that my pit sweat goes here – I should have just put it on the front or something.”
John’s signature has been largely smudged on the guitar since it was signed nearly 10 years ago. “It says, ‘With love to Scott,’ because it was Gunnar Scott, and my last name’s actually Scott; Palladio is my middle name,” he goes on.
“And so ‘With love to Scott,’ and then the Elton John squiggle in there. I’d remembered that when I was thinking about what to bring over to talk about. [It was] so extra special.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Palladio shows off his 2018 Gibson Custom Shop J-45 with its Tiger scratchplate, which he played extensively on his new record, The Perfect Summer’s Day, Before We Lost the Light. “Any bit of acoustic guitar on my album is this girl,” he says.
