The collaboration is the first time Ernie Ball has permanently promoted a signature set of strings into its famous Slinky range.
The signature set features Mayer’s previously unavailable 10.5-47 gauge combination, which has been tailored to suit his playing style. Each string has been crafted with specific gauges and core-to-wrap ratios to deliver the ideal balance of tone and tension.
In addition, the strings are Reinforced Plain Strings (RPS) for enhanced tuning stability and durability
using custom Slinky recipes tailored to Mayer’s personal preferences.

“I’ve always said that I don’t play the guitar, I play the strings,” Mayer says in a press release. “Having a feeling of fluidity is so important in my playing, and Ernie Ball strings have always given me that ability. With the creation of the Silver Slinky set, I have found an even higher level of expression, and I’m excited to share it with guitar players everywhere.”
In an Instagram post, he adds: “All my career I’ve been experimenting with custom sets of guitar strings, and for the past few years I’ve been working closely with Ernie Ball to develop what I consider to be the ultimate set for my playing style.
“Today, I’m delighted to introduce my new Silver Slinky signature electric guitar strings. The gauges are perfectly situated between .010 and .011 sets, and feature special core-to-wrap ratios. The tension is exactly where I’ve always wanted it – big enough to get great tone, but nimble enough to finesse those vocal bends we as guitar players are always going for. I’ve been using them for the past couple of years, and now it’s time to put them in your hands.”
Ernie Ball CEO Brian Ball says: “Very few guitarists in the history of popular music have influenced a generation of players like John Mayer. For over 25 years, John has not only been a remarkable artist but also a dear friend to the Ernie Ball family. This partnership represents our shared passion for music and innovation, and we can’t wait to see how John’s signature Silver Slinky strings continue to inspire guitarists around the world.”
