Coldplay’s Chris Martin still “feels terrible” for mean comment he made about Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie 24 years ago
Chris Martin is not a beefer. The Coldplay frontman is still carrying the guilt of one mean comment he made during an interview 24 years ago about Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream.
Coldplay have just released a brand new album, titled Moon Music, and as part of an exclusive interview with NME prior to its release, Martin spoke about his favourite artists of current. According to the vocalist, there is much more mutual support among musicians now than there was when the band was starting out.

After sharing his admiration for Nick Cave, Fontaines D.C., and IDLES, he states, “I find that what’s so beautiful about the music community now – there tends to be much more love and respect among artists, regardless of genre, just based on talent and truth.”
As for artists on the other side of the coin, Martin can’t think of any he would want to criticise. “I’m sorry, this is why I feel bad talking to NME, because beef is your bread and butter! We don’t do beef,” he says. “I tried beef once in the NME where I said one mean thing about Bobby Gillespie in the year 2000 and I still feel terrible about it. I would apologise to him if I saw him. I’m just not a beefer!”
Though he may not be a “beefer”, others have certainly beefed with Coldplay. According to the publication, Oasis’ Liam Gallagher once said that Martin “looks like a geography teacher” and slated Coldplay fans as “boring and ugly”. However, Gallagher made amends at Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester concert back in 2017.
“I’ve always loved Liam,” Martin now says. “He blows hot and cold, but he’s always free to come round my house for tea and we’ll have lasagne…”
Coldplay’s Moon Music is out now. Their next live show will kick off on 30 October in Melbourne as part of their Music Of The Spheres world tour.
