Neural DSP launches “ultra-compact” Nano Cortex – after confusing fans with bizarre teaser video
Neural DSP has launched a new version of its Quad Cortex, now in an “ultra-portable” size, following a long teaser video which infuriated fans.
The Nano Cortex is described by the brand as an “ultra-powerful” digital amplifier, cabinet simulator, and effects processor that delivers a full guitar/bass rig in a compact pedal. Neural says it has studio-quality sound, a comprehensive signal chain, flexible I/O options, and hosts its esteemed Neural Capture technology, much like its larger sibling.

The Quad Cortex and Neural Capture first landed in 2020. Now, that same technology is packed into a gig-ready pedal that fits in the palm of your hand. The Nano Cortex weighs just 620 g (1.36 lbs) and measures only 14.4 x 10.3 x 6.2 cm (5.6 x 4.0 x 2.4”).
Just last weekend, Neural DSP released a teaser video for the pedal. It was 24 minutes long, and followed producer George Lever as he was tasked with making music for a new “promotional video”.
In the film, he was delivered a briefcase hosting a Quad Cortex, but later discovered that he had the wrong unit, as the Quad Cortex that was meant to be used on the track was supposed to be much smaller in size. Its official name was purposefully censored out at the time, and fans were frustrated at the length of the video as it didn’t give much away. Two other films were released after, following the same story arc.
You can watch the new (and much shorter) promotional video below:
The Nano Cortex was designed to be easy to use, and is branded as beginner-friendly. It is structured into seven device blocks, any of which can be combined or bypassed. These are:
The Neural Capture Block – This block puts a collection of your favourite amps at your fingertips with the same resolution and quality as the flagship Quad Cortex. Nano Cortex ships with 25 Neural Captures of amps, such as the Marshall Silver Jubilee, Peavey 5150, Mesa Boogie JP2C®, and many more. You also get free access to a growing library of thousands of Captures in the Cortex Cloud, or you can create your own Neural Capture “in minutes”.
The IR Loader Block – An advanced IR loader that comes preloaded with ten studio-quality IRs, each featuring five different mic options and six mic positions.
Two Pre-FX Blocks – These include an Adaptive Gate that reduces unwanted noise for a clean signal, and a transposition feature that lets users change the tuning of their instrument with virtually zero latency.
Three Post-FX Blocks – These provide Chorus (a classic Boss DC-2W style chorus sound); an Analogue Delay (a warm BBD-style vintage echo effect); and Mind Hall Reverb: Ambiance from small rooms to large halls.
Additional features include MIDI support for expanded control, a built-in tuner, and free access to the Cortex Cloud app.
“Since we first unveiled the Quad Cortex and Neural Capture in 2020, our mission has been to push the boundaries of what’s possible in music technology. The Nano Cortex is the latest evolution in that journey, bringing the same groundbreaking sound capture technology into an incredibly compact design at an affordable price point,” comments Douglas Castro, Neural DSP Technologies CEO.
“This development is a glimpse into the future of music processing where sophisticated digital tools are designed to be as intuitive and portable as they are powerful, making best-in-class technology accessible to a broader community of musicians.”
The Nano Cortex is available now for $549 USD (€569 EUR). Find out more over at Neural DSP.
