James Hetfield set to appear in new Western thriller, The Thicket – watch him in action in its new teaser trailer

Papa Het? That’s Sheriff Het, to you! Metallica’s James Hetfield is set to feature in upcoming Western thriller, The Thicket – and it’s shaping up to be a rather bloody affair.
The film, directed by Elliott Lester, will plunge Hetfield into the world of Joe R Lansdale’s 2013 mystery novel of the same name. It’s got all the makings of a Western classic – fit with bounty hunters, bands of rebels and plenty of cut-throat shenanigans.

While previous trailers offered glimpses of Hetfield suited and booted, a new clip provides proper footage of him in action. While we’re unsure exactly how Hetfield’s character will influence the plot, he’s clearly playing a sheriff of some kind.
In the fresh clip, we can see Hetfield trying to calm down Game Of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, who had a hand in production alongside his starring role as Shorty. Perhaps that means Sheriff Hetfield plays the role of a peacemaker – or, at the very least, someone who doesn’t love blood-shed when he’s playing cards at the saloon.

Speaking to Collider, director Lester explains the decision to cast the metal legend. “The casting of James Hetfield in The Thicket is a story that feels almost destined,” he explains. “It all began with a dream – one morning I woke up with a clear vision that James had to be in the movie. James Hetfield, a rock god, embodies a raw poetry that fit perfectly with the character we envisioned.”
“From that moment, Peter Dinklage and I were relentless in our pursuit,” he continues. “We tried every possible avenue: his manager, mutual friends, anyone who could help us reach him.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time Hetfield has tried his hand at an acting role. Back in 2019, Hetfield also played officer Bob Hayward in Netflix’s Ted Bundy biopic, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile.

At the time, co-star and Ted Bundy actor Zac Efron spoke highly of Hetfield’s acting skills. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Efron claimed Hetfield “absolutely nailed the part.”
“He just crushed it,” he enthused. “It’s like he’d been acting his whole life. He had no fear. He did a great job. I was ready to maybe give James Hetfield acting tips, but he didn’t ask for a single one. James Hetfield is the shit!”

We’re intrigued to see how Hetfield’s skills have improved in the years since. And The Thicket promises to be an exciting film in itself, providing a fresh take on a classic Western.
“In The Thicket , the most exciting element for audiences is the way it re-imagines the Western genre, presenting a fresh and unique take on a classic film style,” Lester explains to Collider. “By introducing never-before-seen characters like Cut Throat Bill and Reginald Jones, the film [diverges] from traditional Western tropes.”
The Thicket is out 6th September.
