Marcin hits out at “obsolete thinkers” who criticise players like him: “If they’re saying that evolution is a bad thing then essentially the guitar is dead”
Percussive guitarist Marcin has shared his thoughts on those who criticise his playing, among other “modern” or young guitarists.
Marcin is set to release his debut album Dragon In Harmony this September. Known for his percussive and fingerstyle technique, he’s also collaborated with fellow experimental player, Polyphia’s Tim Henson, among other creative guitarists.

The opening track to his forthcoming release is interestingly named Guitar Is Dead, and is a response to those who have spoke negatively of the way he, and other guitarists like Henson, approach playing in a new way.
In the new print issue of Guitar Player, Marcin explains his thinking behind the track: “Well, the album starts with a double entendre, Guitar Is Dead. And that’s kind of the intro to the real first song, I Killed It.
“It’s essentially a cheeky response to purist or obsolete thinkers saying that players like me, Tim, Ichika [Nito] or any of the young players trying to change things in the guitar world are somehow destroying the legacy of the guitar. We’re doing bad things, unthinkable and unlistenable, and that’s not what you’re supposed to be doing. That’s not how you play the guitar.”
He goes on to add, “We are basically killing the guitar. But if they’re saying that evolution is a bad thing, then essentially the guitar is dead. I don’t know what they want us to do. Play Cmaj#11 in a different position? That’s not evolution.
“So either they are saying that guitar is dead because I killed it, and I’m the culprit who is messing it up for everybody. Or I’m saying I killed it because I’m doing something right. I’m pissing off the right people, essentially.”
Guitar.com recently spoke directly with Marcin, who further explained his position as a guitarist seeking to shake things up. “It’s pretty challenging to evolve technique in a digestible way,” he said. “For a typical listener, any new technique is usually quite jarring. Some people feel it’s too much, and that’s fine. I’m happy there is discussion.”
Dragon In Harmony lands 13 September. Find out more about Marcin.
