New book offers up-close look at the guitars of Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Keith Richards and more
A book featuring “up close and personal” some of the most iconic guitars in the history of music – like Kurt Cobain’s Mustang – is set to hit the shelves next month.
Authored and photographed by renowned music photographer Eleanor Jane, Superstar Guitars showcases some of the most famous six-strings the world has seen and the stories behind them – “in exquisite detail” that’s sure to satisfy every guitar aficionado and music history geek out there.
In addition to some of the most stunning electric guitar photography you’ll see, the book also features a foreword by James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers.

For those new to Jane, the photographer is known for photographing vintage and culturally significant guitars, and has worked with the likes of Jack White, Aerosmith, Joe Bonamassa (and their instruments) in recent years.
As mentioned, the 1969 Fender Mustang played by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in the Smells Like Teen Spirit video will be included among the pages of Superstar Guitars. The blue axe famously sold for an eye-watering $4.5 Million at a 2022 auction, far surpassing its original estimate of $600,000.
The book also offers a deep dive into Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Woodstock Stratocaster and the Strat on which Bob Dylan ‘went electric’ at Newport.
Other guitars featured in the book include Dave Grohl’s Gibson Trini Lopez, Noel Gallagher’s Epiphone Riviera, John Frusciante’s Fender Stratocaster, Eric Clapton’s MTV Unplugged Martin, Jeff Buckley’s Fender Telecaster, Tom Morello’s Arm The Homeless, Phoebe Bridgers’ Danelectro Baritone, Jack White’s Airline, Prince’s Yellow Cloud, Thurston Moore’s Fender Jazzmaster, David Gilmour’s Black Strat, Steve Vai’s Ibanez JEM and Matt Bellamy’s Mansion DeLorean. Queen legend Brian May’s equally legendary Red Special is, as you’d expect, included as well.
Priced at £50, Superstar Guitars will be released on 12 September through Headline Publishing.
