“I don’t know why I didn’t discover one of these a long time ago”: Why David Gilmour has swapped his Strats for a Gibson

Every guitar tells its own unique story. Whether you’re playing on a Gibson or a Fender, each specific model will provide you with a unique world of tones to explore.
Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour certainly knows this – and he’s made a point of building an extensive guitar collection to keep himself inspired.

As we edge towards the 6 September release of Gilmour’s upcoming solo album, Luck and Strange, the guitarist has been eagerly educating fans on the guitars featured on the record.
The latest instalment of Gilmour’s YouTube series, David’s Guitars, focuses on the guitarist’s Gibson E-335. According to Gilmour, the E-335 is a newer addition to his collection. “I’ve not got a huge history with Gibson guitars, but this is one I’ve bought comparatively recently to have a different tone,” he begins to explain.
“This is a very, very different sort of guitar than I’m used to,” he admits. “The guitar solo on Dark and Velvet Nights was done on this one, and I don’t know why I didn’t discover one of these a long time ago!”

Gilmour smirks to himself as he knocks out a few chords, chuffed with the Gibson’s tone. “This one is a real beauty – lovely!” he praises.
While Gilmour is often seen with his iconic Black Strat, experimenting with new guitars keeps him on his toes. As Gilmour explains, every guitar can awaken a fresh creative urge within you. “Every time you play a guitar that you’re not used to, it gives you something,” he insists. “Sometimes, it gives you a song.”
According to Gilmour, Luck and Strange is one of his proudest musical feats yet. He even goes as far as to say the record is his “best album” since The Dark Side Of The Moon.
Luck and Strange is out 6th September.
