The Vox semi-hollow Prince used during his legendary Hit and Run tour set to be auctioned off – with an expected sell price of up to £300,000

A “blackburst” Vox semi-hollow electric guitar previously used by Prince on his legendary Hit and Run tour is set to go under the hammer later this month.
The Vox HDC-77 is estimated to fetch between £200,000 – £300,000 and is said to have been “extensively stage-played” by the late musician while he was touring with 3rdeyegirl as his backing band in the mid-2010s.

According to Sotheby’s, the guitar was brought to auction by Donna Grantis, Prince’s guitarist and bandmate in 3rdeyegirl and New Power Generation. The instrument comes directly from her private collection and “hasn’t been played since Prince last performed with it.”
The auction house also notes “substantial imagery” of the guitar’s use by Prince on stage: documented performances include the final night of Prince’s Montreux Jazz Festival appearance on 15 July 2013; throughout his 3rdeyegirl HitNRun tours of 2014-2015 in the UK, including at London’s KOKO Club, the Electric Ballroom and Shepherd’s Bush Empire; and venues across the United States and Canada including at the Baltimore ‘Rally 4 Peace’ on 10 May 2015.
Prince’s last documented use of the blackburst Vox was during a performance for Barack Obama at the White House in June 2015.
Introduced in 2010, the HDC-77 includes many of the features and design cues from the Vox Virage guitar series. The instrument’s body is uniquely contoured and is paired with two CoAxe pickups capable of producing single-coil, P-90 or humbucker tones.
The Vox HDC-77 arrives as part of Sotheby’s inaugural Popular Culture auction, which brings together significant artefacts from the worlds of music, film and entertainment, with bidding opening online from 29 August until 12 September 2024.

Speaking of Prince guitars, the musician’s iconic Cloud 3 recently set a new record for the most expensive Prince guitar ever sold at auction. Originally estimated to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000, the Cloud 3 eventually sold for an eye-watering $910,000 at the Julien’s Music Icons sale in New York.
