Epiphone continues its longest signature artist partnership with the Jack Casady Fretless Bass
Epiphone has launched a brand new signature model with Jack Casady, continuing its longest standing signature artist partnership with the legendary bassist.
The Jack Casady Fretless Bass has been designed by both Casady and Epiphone, and honours the innovative, melodic bass work that the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee is known for.

As a founding member of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Casady “defined the role of bass guitar in rock and roll for decades”, liberating the bass guitar from its traditional role as part of the rhythm section.
Casady’s band Jefferson Airplane shot to success in 1967 with hits Somebody to Love and White Rabbit making them a “cornerstone of San Francisco’s burgeoning rock scene”. His bass work was a highlight of Surrealistic Pillow, the band’s ‘67 breakthrough album.
“That album was really a unique statement,” says Casady. “There were a lot of different styles of songs contributed by everybody, including an instrumental acoustic fingerpicking original tune by Jorma [Kaukonen, guitarist] called Embryonic Journey. It was quite an eclectic album and I think it still holds up today.”
The new Fretless Bass is described as the culmination of years of experimentation by Casady to find an instrument with superior electric tone and the response of an acoustic bass.
Specification-wise, it features the Casady-designed JCB-1 Low-Impedance Humbucker, and a three-position rotary impedance control for a wide range of tonal versatility. It’s finished in Aged Royal Tan and also, for the first time with a Fretless version, the Epiphone Jack Casady Bass comes with a premium gig bag.
Many Epiphone models in recent months have been released at a slightly higher price point, particularly due to the expansion of its Inspired By Gibson range. These models feature the addition of more Gibson-esque features such as the open-book headstock and have premium, often four-figure prices. Casady’s bass, however, comes in at £799.
