Courtney Love on her solo LP: “Like Steve Coogan, or crack, it’s one of my life’s great shames”
Courtney Love has called her 2004 debut solo album, America’s Sweetheart, one of the “great shames” in her life, alongside crack cocaine and Steve Coogan.
Love offered the sentiment in an Instagram post made yesterday (5 January), in which she shared a photo of a car decked out in artwork inspired by the album’s cover.
“Maybe one day I won’t hate that record,” she captioned. “It has some good songs. But like Steve Coogan, or crack, it’s one of my life’s great shames.”
She added: “Just the period, sloppiness, men, money, drugs, nightmare… although Chateau Miraval (where we made it) doesn’t suck.”

America’s Sweetheart is Love’s only solo album to date and one that she herself has been highly critical of. She spoke harshly about the album in a 2006 interview with defunct Hole fansite, moonwashedrose.com [saved on grungeforum.com], saying:
“The sound on America’s Sweetheart sucked beyond words. The production was a nightmare. Linda [Perry] and I had written some really good songs, but they were rendered lazily and sound like shit. The art was horrific and not my idea and the label didn’t back it at all. I was busy taking drugs to dull the pain of having lost everything and made a shit album to boot.”
Meanwhile, Love was briefly connected to Coogan in 2005, though she didn’t know of his TV personality, Alan Partridge, until later on.
“I had never seen Alan Partridge,” she told Love Magazine. “But I was in a band with people who did know about Alan Partridge, so I had to make a record with them constantly saying to me: ‘Back of the net!’”
