Nine new electric and acoustic guitars: November 2019
Every month, we compile a few lists of guitars fresh out of the oven. Here’s one dedicated to the latest electric and acoustic guitars.
Gibson Chuck Berry 1955 ES-350T
Chuck Berry fans all over the world were sent reeling when Gibson unveiled its plans for the Chuck Berry 1955 ES-350T. The limited-edition, historically-accurate guitar was made available from 18 October, the date that would have been Berry’s 93rd birthday. Working with the icon’s family, Gibson toiled to create an authentic instrument, featuring figured maple, a pair of dog-ear P-90 pickups and a replica strap. The package also includes a replica of the Zuni “Sun God” bolo tie that Chuck wore throughout the 50s.
Music Man Mariposa
Image: Music ManThe Music Man Mariposa – now available in the US – was designed in collaboration with Mars Volta and At The Drive-In composer/guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López. Built for offset lovers, this instrument is positively eye-catching, especially with its laser-etched pickguard. In terms of electronics, it features a three-way pickup selector and two custom-wound EBMM humbuckers, each with its own volume pot. The Mariposa comes in two variants, Standard and Deluxe, each with two unique finishes.
Ibanez AW84CE
AW80CE (top) and the AW84CE (bottom) Image: IbanezIbanez has introduced two guitars to its Artwood acoustic range, both featuring what the brand calls a ‘Gradation’ finish. On our radar is the AW84CE, which boasts a Vertical Natural Browned Burst. It has a stripe of lighter wood running down the middle of the okoume top, highlighting the tonewood’s grain pattern. Other features include an ovangkol fretboard, bone nut, and an Ibanez T-bar undersaddle pickup. The latter is powered by an AEQ-TP2 preamp with an onboard tuner.
Fender Flame Koa Top Stratocaster
Image: FenderFender has added the Flame Koa Top Stratocaster to its Rarities family. The highlight of this guitar, of course, is the exotic Koa top on its ash body. In terms of tone, it features a H-S-S pickup configuration, with pups designed by Fender’s pickup guru, Tim Shaw. The humbucker is voiced for powerful yet articulate tones while single-coils are ‘59-style overwounds.
Cort X700 Duality
Image: CortCort’s new super-strat is a beast that’s built for versatility. Its two humbuckers – a Seymour Duncan TB4 bridge and SH2N neck – will get you full-fat rhythm and lead tones, but you’ll also have access to two single-coil tones thanks to its five-way blade switch. It also features a Floyd Rose-style tremolo that’s designed for everything from playful modulation to dive-bombing.
Godin Guitars Session HT
Image: GodinGodin’s latest entrant to the Session line-up is the Session HT. Unlike the tremolo-fitted LTD, this new axe features a string-through hardtail bridge to deliver added stability and sustain. With a H-S-S configuration loaded with Godin’s own pups, the Session HT is primed for a wide range of styles. This axe is available in Matte Black, Trans Cream, and Bourbon Burst.
Solar Guitars A1.7D LTD
Image: Solar GuitarsAlong with the A1.6 LTD, the A1.7 LTD is a new addition to Solar Guitar’s popular A1 line of axes. The highlight of this new seven-string is a distressed finish that gives it a distinctly ‘worn’ characteristic. Otherwise, the A1.7 LTD’s features are not dissimilar to its siblings in the A1 family. These include a super-strat alder body, glow-in-the-dark inlays, Solar Duncan neck and bridge humbuckers, and an Evertune F-type bridge.
PRS SE Hollowbody Standard
The PRS SE Hollowbody Standard, in Tobacco Burst. Image: PRSPRS recently announced its 2020 line-up and one of the more exciting entrants is the SE Hollowbody Standard. This guitar features an all-mahogany body, which capitalises on the tonewood’s warm characteristic and the hollowbody construction’s articulate resonance to deliver exceptional tonal quality. Other highlights worth mentioning are the guitar’s dual humbucker configuration paired with a one-piece wrapover bridge.
Lava Music Lava Me Pro
Image: Lava MusicLava Music has been turning heads with its carbon fibre guitars, and now it’s launched the Lava Me Pro, an instrument that’s tailored for live performances. One of its major highlights is its soundboard, which is made from Lava Music’s own AirCarbon material. This design combines carbon fibre layers in a honeycomb structure, so it’s as stiff as normal carbon fibre but only two-thirds the weight. According to the brand, tone is not compromised either, as the material is touted to deliver “the elevated acoustic sound quality of a professional performance at a fraction of the size”.
