Nilüfer Yanya: H34T RISES
A remixed version of her //Miss Universe// track //Heat Rises//, the revisited single is accompanied by a video shot around a dystopian cityscape in Istanbul. Read our interview with Nilüfer here.
Big Thief: Two Hands
The title track from the US indie-rockers’ second long-player of 2019, Two Hands// opens with summery, arpeggiated guitars before Adrianne Lenker’s eerie vocal enters, accompanied by worldly percussion.
Beabadoobee: Space Cadet
Dirty Hit’s latest and most talked about new signing has released her debut EP, Space Cadet. The title track demonstrates her clear affection for 90s garage rock and shoegaze – reflective lyrics and moody guitars abound, with reverb-drenched lead lines throughout the chorus section.
Caribou: Home
Caribou’s latest chillwave anthem is based around a sample of Gloria Barnes’ Home, with filtered, breakbeat drums and hip-hop-infused guitar lines.
Sleater-Kinney: ANIMAL
Released ahead of their 2020 European tour, ANIMAL is a rousing, rage-filled song with aggressive, distorted guitars. The vocals were recorded at St. Vincent’s home studio, which only adds to the song’s gravitas.
Julien Baker: Tokyo
Prolific songwriter Julien Baker has released Tokyo, her latest offering following a release for Sub-Pop’s Singles Club. Opening with chorus-laced arpeggiated synth, it’s accompanied by driving guitars with a mass of emotion.
Angel Olsen: Lark
The opening track from Angel Olsen’s orchestral new album, All Mirrors. Eerie strings open the track before soft, chordal guitars enter. Accompanied by rising violins and Olsen’s piercing vocal. Pure bliss.
EOB: Santa Teresa
Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien has finally stopped the teasing and released the first single from his long-gestating solo venture, called Santa Teresa. More akin to Brian Eno than Radiohead, it’s full of ambient guitars and dissonance.
Vagabon: Every Woman
The third single from Laetitia Tamko, aka Vagabon, is an anthem for those marginalised by society, according to the singer. The accompanying video was shot by fellow Cameroonian Lino Asana and is reminiscent of her life as an African teenager.
Brittany Howard: History Repeats
Alabama Shakes singer/guitarist Brittany Howard has shared the latest release from her debut solo album, Jaime. Dry rhythm guitars reminiscent of Funkadelic’s Eddie Hazel are accompanied by fizzing, wah leads and Howard’s characteristic vocal.
