Ascend into a world of lo-fi ring-modulation and delay with Deep Space Devices’ Radio-Bright
Deep Space Devices’ latest offering, the Radio-Bright, is available to preorder now. The pedal is primarily a ring-modulator combined with a delay. It has a few unique tricks up its sleeve, inspired by the famous Wow! signal – a strong narrowband radio signal received by SETI, believed to be of extraterrestrial origin.
The delay time, mix and feedback controls all manage the delay aspect of the pedal, alongside the secondary momentary footswitch. Pressing it down will ramp up the delay feedback until you’re floating in a sea of oscillation – returning to the feedback setting determined by the control knob as you release it.
The bitcrushed ring modulator is governed by the remaining three knobs. The sample rate of the bitcrushing is controlled by the central Frequency knob, while the oscillation rate is controlled by the Rate knob. The Intensity knob, as you might expect, controls the amount of ring modulation in play.
The left toggle switch puts either the delay or the modulation in focus, with the right toggle controlling the secondary modulation effects being applied. The bitcrushed output of the pedal, when the different effects are in play with each other, does conjure up the lo-fi background chatter of a spaceship radio, with the delay adding a sense of space and mystery.
